Andrea Muttoni is a technology and product leader with a background spanning software engineering, product management, developer relations, and artificial intelligence. He is currently CEO of The Data Foundation, having previously served as Chief Product Officer and Head of Developer Relations at Story and Head of Developer Relations at Flow. [3]
Muttoni graduated from the Universita Bocconi with a Bachelor’s in Finance in 2012 and a Master’s in Applied Economics in 2015. [4]
Muttoni began his career as Co-Founder and Partner at VAS Srl, where he worked on full-stack development, product design, UI/UX, and business development. He also worked as a Full Stack Engineer at SDA Bocconi School of Management, developing education technology and business simulations using Node.js and React. At Amazon, Muttoni served as Product Manager for Kindle, focusing on growth, customer engagement, new features, and publisher relationships across European marketplaces. He later became Lead Technical Evangelist for Amazon Alexa and Conversational AI in Europe, where he focused on voice technology, developer education, and technical advocacy. Muttoni joined Flow as Head of Developer Relations, working across developer advocacy, education, and marketing while supporting initiatives including hackathons, permissionless deployment, node operation, and the Flow Ambassador program. He subsequently joined Story as Head of Developer Relations and then Chief Product Officer, where he led product development for a platform connecting AI companies with intellectual property owners. In June 2026, he became CEO of The Data Foundation. [5]
In an August 2026 interview on the Validation Cloud podcast, Muttoni discussed the importance of reliable ground-truth data for AI systems, arguing that repeatedly generating synthetic data without grounding it in real-world information can degrade model performance. He explained how blockchain-based receipts can provide immutable records of data provenance, supporting transparency, attribution, and compliance for AI training datasets, and described The Data Foundation’s shift in focus from intellectual property infrastructure toward AI training data in response to industry demand and feedback. Muttoni emphasized the continuing importance of human-generated data for complex AI applications such as robotics and predicted growing demand for traceable, certified datasets as the AI data market becomes more fragmented and open-source models make training more accessible. He also discussed expectations for a major acceleration in robotics and AI data demand, noting the Data Foundation’s growing volume of blockchain receipts and activity as indicators of the expanding market for verifiable AI data. [6]
In an October 2024 presentation at ETHMilan, Muttoni discussed Story’s approach to making intellectual property more programmable and accessible, arguing that traditional IP systems are complex, static, and restrictive for creators and do not adequately accommodate Web3, AI-generated content, or modern forms of digital creation. He argued for a new IP model in which rights can be legally licensed, programmed, and made more liquid, enabling applications such as collateralization, trading, and permissionless innovation. Muttoni described Story’s on-chain system, in which media can be registered with associated metadata, licensing terms, and royalty structures, allowing content to be remixed, licensed, and monetized across platforms. He also outlined the protocol’s technical architecture, centered on an L1 blockchain and smart contracts for managing IP licenses and royalty flows, with an emphasis on composability, interoperability, legal enforceability, and collaboration across the ecosystem.
