Kyle Kosic is an American artificial intelligence engineer and researcher known as a co-founder of the AI company xAI. He has gained significant media attention for his career path, which includes roles at rival labs OpenAI and "Project Prometheus," a secretive AI venture founded by Jeff Bezos. ^{[1] [2]}​

Education

Kosic holds a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, which he completed in 2019 with a specialization in Machine Learning. He previously earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics from The University of Alabama in Huntsville, attending from 2011 to 2015. ^[5]

Career

Early Career in Data Science

Kosic began his professional career in data and analytics. He held roles as a Senior Data Analyst and later a Data Scientist at IntegriChain from February 2016 to September 2018. He then had brief tenures as an Analytic Consultant in Data Science at Wells Fargo and as a Quantitative Analyst at Lucena Research, Inc., concluding in April 2019. ^[5]​

OnScale

In April 2019, Kosic transitioned to a high-performance computing role, joining OnScale as a Software Engineer, HPC/SRE. He remained with the company for two years, leaving in April 2021. ^[5]​

OpenAI (First Stint)

Kosic first joined OpenAI as a Member of Technical Staff in April 2021. During this initial two-year period, he worked within one of the world's leading AI research labs before departing in May 2023 for a new venture. ^[5]​

xAI

In May 2023, Kosic became one of the 11 original co-founders of xAI, an artificial intelligence company established by Elon Musk. ^[3] Serving as the Infrastructure Lead, he contributed to projects including the company's Colossus data center. ^[3] Kosic left xAI in April 2024, reportedly becoming the first of the original co-founders to depart the company. ^[2]​

Return to OpenAI and Project Prometheus

Following his exit from xAI, Kosic returned to OpenAI in May 2024 as a Member of Technical Staff. His second tenure at the company was brief.
